Blossomwood Hospital – Kingfisher Ward
Hand-painted Christmas Window Display
Project Overview
This seasonal window display was created for Kingfisher Ward at Blossomwood Hospital, part of King’s Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
The brief was simple but important:
Create something traditional, calming, and recognisable for a dementia ward environment.
The aim was not just decoration, but to bring warmth, familiarity, and a sense of seasonal comfort to patients, staff, and visitors.
The Brief
Because the ward supports individuals living with dementia, the artwork needed to be:
-
Traditional and nostalgic
-
Clear and easy to read visually
-
Calm rather than overwhelming
-
Friendly and comforting
-
Suitable for a healthcare environment
The design had to feel festive without being busy or overstimulating.

The Concept
The final design featured:
-
A classic wooden fence stretching across the window panels
-
Soft snow layering to frame the composition
-
A traditional lamppost
-
A robin wearing a Santa hat
-
“Merry Christmas” lettering in a clear, legible style
The robin was chosen intentionally. It is a strong seasonal symbol in the UK and often associated with familiarity and comfort.
The composition was designed across three window panels to create one cohesive scene while respecting the architectural framing.
Process
-
Window measurements and layout planning
-
Traditional concept development
-
Hand-painted directly onto exterior glass
Special attention was paid to line thickness and contrast so the artwork remained visible from inside the ward as well as from the courtyard.
Because this was a healthcare setting, the design remained uncluttered and balanced, ensuring clarity and calmness.

The Outcome
The finished window transformed the courtyard-facing glass into a warm festive scene.
Feedback from staff was extremely positive, with the artwork described as “absolutely amazing”. The display created a welcoming seasonal atmosphere for both patients and healthcare professionals.
The project also opened further discussions around potential wall artwork within the ward.
Illustration at Scale
This project highlights how illustration-led design can be adapted sensitively for specialist environments. By focusing on recognisable imagery, balanced composition, and thoughtful colour use, the artwork supported the emotional tone of the space rather than overpowering it.
